New York, Central Park. On a deserted night street, Michael O'Hara scatters bandits who attacked a beautiful blonde. She introduces herself as a Russian girl, originally from Shanghai. Michael is a giant with the face of a child, an unemployed sailor, behind whom is the murder of a Francoist in Spain. Although Michael senses something is wrong, Rosalie half-tricks him into working on her husband's yacht, Banister, a successful lawyer crippled by polio.

Struck on the spot by the fatal blonde, O'Hara sets sail. The Banisters' yacht's route lies through Mexico and the Panama Canal to San Francisco. Along the way, Grisby, Banister's business partner, approaches Michael with a controversial offer to help stage his murder so that he can disappear and collect huge insurance. Grisby promises to pay $5,000, with that money Michael and Rosalie will be able to run away and start a new life. Michael agrees and ... practically signs his own death warrant.
