The film is set in 1917, shortly before the US entered the war. Caleb and Aaron, sons of rancher Adam Trask, grow up believing their mother is dead. In fact, she left her father immediately after the birth of the twins. Caleb, misunderstood by his father, is convinced that he does not love him and considers himself evil incarnate. One day, he learns that his mother is still alive and living in nearby Monterey, running a dark bar that is actually a brothel. Meanwhile, Adam goes bankrupt. Cal decides to get rich in order to save his father from troubles and win his love. Aaron's fiancee, Abra, falls under Cal's spell and things don't go as smoothly as expected.
