Before World War II, Paris was crowded with illegal refugees from Germany fleeing forced deportation. One of them is Dr. Ravik (Charles Boyer), who helps other refugees with illegal operations. He accidentally saves Joan Madu (Ingrid Bergman) from suicide after the sudden death of her lover. They fall in love, but soon Ravik is expelled from the country, and Joan becomes a dependent of the rich Alex. All this time, Ravik wants revenge on the Nazi official Gaake (Charles Lawton).
